What we do
The goal of the Flying Pastors is to make disciples of Jesus who can make other disciples. We accomplish this by sending Basotho missionaries to the mountain people of Lesotho. There are two main activities of the Lesotho Flying Pastors: support of full-time pastoral couples and support of short-term teams.
The pastoral couples live in these isolated mountain communities and build relationships in the communities in which they live. Their methods of making disciples are as varied as the places and people among whom they minister. Some examples of the activities of the pastoral couples are: leading Bible studies, visitation, marital counseling and workshops, grief counseling, sports ministry, teaching literacy and English, tutoring school children, showing the Jesus film, and economic and business development.
The short term teams serve a dual purpose: development of leadership and personnel for full time ministry, and supplementing the work of the pastoral couples. The short term teams are flown to the areas where the pastoral couples work and are led by an experienced mentor to do outreaches and help with projects initiated by the pastoral couples. In the process, the volunteers, often youth from local churches, gain perspective and maturity in their faith and ability to share the Gospel. Some choose to develop their gifts to serve and enter longer-term commitments in the Flying Pastors organization.
Whether through the monthly visits of the short term teams or through the ministries of the pastoral couples, the people of the mountains are seeing and receiving Christ's love in a way that is radically different than what they have known before. For example, the marital interaction of the pastoral couples that demonstrates loving companionship, closeness and fidelity, is a substantial witness. Perspectives about what is possible change as people see the things being taught from the Bible lived out. They begin to ask questions and seek answers. The answer the pastors give is a life of following Christ.
While the pastoral couples have open-ended commitments to the areas in which they work, their ultimate goal is to establish local leadership, remove themselves from the area, and begin again in a new place. A leader from the community who all can see has changed into Christlikeness, is the most effective proponent of the Gospel. Those are the people that the pastoral couples are seeking to disciple and leave in charge of the work in these areas.
