VISION:

That the isolated people in the mountains of Lesotho will hear about Jesus, trust in His power and be transformed physically and spiritually as they follow Him as disciples.

This arises from a desire to obey the command of Jesus Christ, known as the Great Commission, Matthew 28:19-20. It is in recognition that most of the isolated people of Lesotho live in a state of bondage to fear of false worship and face not only hopelessness in this life but also an eternity separated from the God of love who desires that none should perish but that all should come to a knowledge of the truth. Our vision or hope is that no one in the mountains of Lesotho should face this awful reality but rather would hear of Jesus and be transformed by trust in Him and by following Him.

MISSION:

Reach out to the isolated mountain people of Lesotho through repeated visits to bring the message of Jesus. Disciple non-denominational church plants so the power of the gospel will replicate to surrounding areas.

The vision is accomplished through the activities of the mission. There are several important aspects to the mission. It is to the isolated, who have not heard of Jesus or who have not heard a pure gospel due to their isolation. Our ability to reach isolated people through use of aircraft makes the ministry unique. Further, this ministry is not merely an evangelistic one, but one that repeatedly visits the same areas to shepherd individuals and groups of individuals in spiritual development to the point that the planted churches can function independently and will send their own missionaries to their neighbors. We do not seek to plant a specific denominational church, but rather to focus on the core of the gospel: trusting in, following and obeying Jesus Christ, our Savior and King.

VALUES:

“That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.” John 17:21

Our values can be summed up in a word: UNITY.  Though this ministry is made of individuals from numerous different churches, our unity of vision and mission as Flying Pastors demonstrates the power of Christ and invites those who witness this unity to investigate the claims of Jesus Christ.

 History

For over 40 years, MAF (Mission Aviation Fellowship) has primarily served the physical needs of the Basotho (the people of Lesotho) by offering hundreds of life-saving medical evacuations every year and by supporting mountain health clinics and their staff in the battle against HIV. Throughout its time of service in Lesotho, MAF has also provided transport for missionaries and disciple makers who desire to reach isolated people in the mountains. The spiritual isolation and need of the mountain peoples of Lesotho has been addressed for many years by a group of national pastors from Maseru, the capital city of Lesotho, who travel on MAF planes to the mountains to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. Though these pastors are from various denominations, they have come together with the common goal of bringing the message of the power and love of Christ to their own people who are people isolated in a culture of fear of nature and ancestor worship. Over the years, many forgotten people have heard for the first time the name of Jesus, begun to comprehend who He is, and had their lives transformed. In 2015, due to rising costs of aviation and economic challenges in Lesotho, MAF began to subsidize the flights made by these pastors.  In 2018, the Lesotho Flying Pastors developed a Vision, Mission and Values to focus its efforts toward church planting among the most isolated and unreached of Lesotho. Since that time, the Flying Pastors has provided logistical support and transport for dozens of pastoral teams and supported several full-time pastoral couples who live among and minister to the people of some of Lesotho's most isolated villages.
